What Is Curation?
Curation originally pertained to the collection of fine art such as paintings and sculptures. It involves the collection of art as well as the thoughtful creation of a body of artwork that goes together. An art curator usually displays their collection or collections through exhibits and museums. While curators ultimately buy art that they like, they also consider the significance of the artist, the work’s future value, and its quality. Those who create and visit fine art collections enjoy a rich dialogue of ideas within the works.
What’s the Big Idea?
Curating art happens based on a theme, whether it be through the curator’s own mind or the inspiration of a group of curators and thinkers. Someone might be drawn to a specific genre of art, such as Impressionistic art, Kinetic art, or Pop art, and start to collect over time. Or someone might take interest in a particular group, such as Jewish artists of the 20th century. Some curators will create an exhibit based on a communal conversation that inspires their next project. The topic could be an idea, such as “psychology” or “communication” or “home.” Whichever way inspiration comes, every art collection has a theme.
Conversation in the Context
The art of curating art takes into consideration both the individual piece and context with other pieces in the collection. This contrast or similarity between artworks can happen in various ways. Some works might go together because they complement each other or share the same elements of design. Others might strike an interesting contrast.
